A migration skills assessment is a formal evaluation of your educational qualifications and work experience by a recognized authority in your destination country, confirming that your skills and credentials meet the standards required for a nominated occupation. For Australian skilled migration, Canadian Express Entry, and New Zealand skilled migrant pathways, a positive skills assessment is a mandatory step before a visa application can proceed. Your Nepal-issued documents — degree certificates, transcripts, and employment letters — must be certified and in some cases translated before submission to the skills assessment body. Hamro Notary at Chabahil, Kathmandu, prepares certified document packages for skills assessments submitted to Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, ACS, ANMAC, AIQS, and other assessment bodies.

What Is a Migration Skills Assessment?

A migration skills assessment evaluates whether your qualifications and work experience (from Nepal or other countries) are equivalent to the standard required for a specific occupation in your target country. A positive assessment is required to:

  • Apply for Australian skilled migration visas (subclass 189, 190, 491, 186)
  • Claim skills points in the Canadian Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
  • Apply for New Zealand’s Skilled Migrant Category
  • Apply for some employer-sponsored visas where the occupation requires skills assessment

Skills assessments are occupation-specific and each occupation has a designated assessing authority. The wrong assessment body cannot be used — always check the correct body for your ANZSCO (Australia/NZ) or NOC (Canada) code.

Document Requirements for Skills Assessment from Nepal

The specific documents required vary by assessment body and occupation, but generally include:

  • Academic transcripts: Sent directly from your Nepali university (e.g., Tribhuvan University examination controller’s office) to the assessment body, plus a certified English translation
  • Degree/diploma certificates: Certified copy with notary seal; certified English translation if in Nepali
  • Employment reference letters: From each employer, on company letterhead, describing your role, duties, responsibilities, and employment period; certified English translation if in Nepali
  • Police clearance certificate (PCC): Some assessment bodies (ANMAC for nursing, AMC for medicine) require a PCC as part of the application; certified English translation
  • Passport copy: Certified true copy
  • Citizenship card (nagarikta): Certified true copy or certified English translation
  • Any professional registration certificates: Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Engineering Council, Nepal Nursing Council — certified copy and certified English translation if in Nepali

Certified Translation Requirements for Skills Assessments

Skills assessment bodies have specific requirements for translations:

  • Complete and accurate: Every word of the original must be translated — no abbreviations or omissions
  • Translator competency certification: The translator must certify their competency in both languages alongside an accuracy declaration
  • Notary seal: The translation must be certified by a registered Notary Public; this is the standard accepted by all major Australian assessment bodies for translations from Nepal
  • NAATI (for Australian bodies): Australian assessment bodies strongly prefer NAATI-accredited translations for documents translated in Australia; for documents translated in Nepal, certified translations from a registered Nepali Notary Public are the accepted standard. If an assessment body specifically insists on NAATI, clarify whether this applies to Nepal-based translations.
⚠️ Direct University Submission For most Australian and Canadian skills assessments, academic transcripts must be sent DIRECTLY from the issuing university to the assessment body — not through you. Hamro Notary translates the documents you provide, but the institution submission is separate. Contact Tribhuvan University or your institution’s examination controller about their process for sending direct transcripts to overseas bodies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a skills assessment take?

Processing times vary significantly by body and application volume: Engineers Australia (3–6 months), VETASSESS (3–6 months), ACS (4–8 weeks for standard), ANMAC (3–6 months). Document preparation at Hamro Notary does not add significant time — the delays are in the assessment body’s own processing. Submit complete applications to minimize back-and-forth queries.

My degree is from a private college affiliated with Tribhuvan University — will this affect my assessment?

Most skills assessment bodies evaluate the credential’s level and field of study rather than whether it was from a public or private institution, provided it is from a recognized institution (recognized by Nepal’s Ministry of Education). TU-affiliated colleges’ degrees are recognized. The key is that the transcript comes directly from TU’s examination controller, not from the college itself.

Can I submit the same certified translation package to multiple assessment bodies?

Certified translations from Hamro Notary are certified to be accurate translations of the original documents — there is no restriction on which body you submit them to. You can use the same certified translation package for multiple assessment applications.
